  • Joseph Lum, SEnior Pastor

    Joe was born and raised in Seattle, was saved by the Lord Jesus from his sins at a young age, and called to the ministry after his studies at the UW (BS Electrical Engineering, 1992). He was ordained in 1998, educated at The Master’s Seminary (Master of Divinity, 1995), and Dallas Theological Seminary (Master of Sacred Theology 1998; Doctor of Ministry 2005 in Biblical Counseling). He assisted in the planting of Living Hope Bible Church, has served there in various roles since 1995 and as the senior pastor since 2001. He enjoys spending time with his family, fellowship with other believers, worshiping the Lord, home projects, working out, and has been very involved in short-term missions often with a focus on training pastors (Cambodia, India, Philippines, Uganda, Mexico, & Honduras). He served for four years as a board member of Action International Ministries, a mission agency reaching the neediest people in the world with the Gospel. He is the co-contributor to the following books: “The Deity of Christ,” Ch. 8 in Preach Christ, CGM Publishers, 2016; and “Homosexuality, Marriage, and the Bible” Ch. 1 & 2 in Homosexuality, Gay Marriage and The Bible, CGM Publishers, 2015. His favorite scriptures include Ecclesiastes 12:13, Acts 20:24, 2 Timothy 2:15, and 2:24. 

  • henry chen, elder

    Henry is the husband of Theresa, and the father of Caleb, Nathan, and Abigail. They are from Toronto, Canada but have made WA their home since 2001. Henry has degrees in Kinesiology (BSc) and Systems Design Engineering (MASc) and works in the field of human-computer interaction. In middle school, he accepted Christ after many years of hearing the gospel from a faithful Sunday school teacher. Besides spending time with his family, Henry loves to read and often finds himself working through several books at a time.

  • barry martin, elder

    Barry was born in California and relocated to Washington in 1973 with his wife Margaret, one daughter and twin sons. He was saved in 1984 at the age of 40 and is presently retired. He loves serving at Living Hope Bible Church and enjoys outdoor activities. 

  • wil wong, elder

    Wil grew up in the Seattle area and has been a part of Living Hope Bible Church since its inception.  He's been privileged to watch the church grow both spiritually and numerically.  Wil was saved late in grade school and has served in various ministries through the years.  He loves spending time with his wife Vera and their three kids.  Will enjoys sports and is a big fan of the Seahawks and Huskies.

  • vernon chee, deacon

    Vern was born in Bremerton, WA and raised in San Francisco and Seattle. He graduated from the University of Washington and currently works for Boeing. He is married to Bing and are blessed with two sons.  He was saved in 1989 and has attended and served at Living Hope Bible Church since its inception.  He is involved in the A/V Ministry, active in small group, and was instrumental in the acquisition of the LHBC facility.

  • daniel mar, deacon

    Daniel was born and raised in Washington as the middle child of five homeschooled siblings, graduated from the University of Washington, and works as a research scientist for UW Medicine. He was saved at a young age and has grown up attending Living Hope Bible Church. He is grateful to God for the faithful teaching, family atmosphere, and opportunities to serve at LHBC. His hobbies include playing sports (especially ultimate frisbee), following all things sci fi, and spending time with friends.

  • tom mar, deacon

    Tom was born and raised in Sacramento, California and moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington Dental School in 1977. He met Yvonne at the UW and came to faith in Jesus Christ in 1978. Tom and Yvonne married a year after their graduation and have been blessed with five children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. Tom and his family had been members of the core team that the Lord used to start the ministry which is now Living Hope Bible Church. 

  • Mike Nelson, Deacon

    Mike has lived in the Seattle area all his life (except for college years). He was afraid to die until friends lead him to Jesus in college. Now with the assurance of eternal life, he has committed his life to Him. With a degree in electrical engineering, Mike has worked for over 35 years in the technology field. Mike and his wife, Nobi, have been blessed with four sons. Since Mike likes to eat he complements that with being active, golfing with the boys or running.


  • jason tsai, deacon

    Jason moved to the Seattle area with his family in 2011 and has been attending Living Hope Bible Church ever since. He works in consumer electronics as a product design engineer. During his teenage years, he came to know Christ through a local youth group and in recent years he has served in several ministries, including teaching children's Sunday School.  Jason, and his wife Thyda, love spending time with their three children. Jason also enjoys basketball and outdoor activities. 

  • Esther Chan, Deaconess

    Esther was born and raised in Hong Kong, but came to Seattle in 1987. At age six she was introduced to the gospel and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. As an adult, she worked as an Oncology Certified Nurse. As a nurse, she has seen many individuals battle through one of the toughest times in their lives. She was encouraged to see that those who believed in the LORD were never afraid of death. She says, “Throughout the last 61 years God has always been with me. Even at times when I was so weak, but with God's amazing Grace, he always helps me to stand firm again and again.

  • Yvonne Mar, deaconess

    Yvonne was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Hawaii during her junior year in high school. She met her husband Tom at the University of Washington. They have five grown children and two grandchildren. Yvonne was saved in 1978 during a youth group meeting when the Holy Spirit convicted her heart through verses in the Book of Romans.

  • margaret martin, deaconess

    Margaret was born and raised in Southern California where she first met her husband Barry at the age 12. They married nine years later and raised three children. They moved from California to Washington in the 70's. Margaret came to know the Lord Jesus at the age of 38 and has tried to dedicate her life to Him since then.  She loves serving at Living Hope Bible Church, having bible study at her home, working in the yard, sewing, tending with her husband to two old Labrador Retrievers, and when the time permits, traveling in their trailer.

  • Vicki Miyatake, deaconess

    Vicki was born & raised in Washington State. She is a graduate from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Textile Design. She works for her husband, David, who is a dentist in Maple Valley, WA. She accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in 1992. David and Vicki have one daughter, Barbara. Vicki's interests are studying God's Word, spending time with family & friends, running, hiking & watching football, particularly the Seahawks & Huskies!!! 

  • Nobi Nelson, Deaconess

    Nobi was born and raised in Japan of Christian parents who followed God's calling to serve the elderly there. As a middle schooler, coming to realize her sinfulness, she repented and gave her life to her Savior and Lord. She studied Social Work at the University of Washington. She and her husband, Mike, have home schooled their four boys, three of which have left the nest. Being the only female in the house, she enjoys spending time with ladies of all ages. She also enjoys watching movies based on historical events and playing games with her family.

  • karen berger, children's ministry coordinator

    Karen was born in California, but moved to the Bellevue area when she was five years old and has lived in the area ever since. She was saved at a young age and grew up attending and serving alongside her family at church. Staying local, she graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in Home & Family Life Education and a K-8 Teaching Certificate. Using her degree, she has taught in the public, private, and homeschooling fields for the past 26 years. Her teaching role at home is coming to an end as two of her four homeschooled children are already in college and the other two are finishing high school. Since her college years, she has volunteered as a teacher or ministry leader in Children's Ministry at the churches she's attended. She has also been employed as a Nursery Director for two different organizations. After attending LHBC for six years with her husband Rick and their children, Karen joined LHBC staff as the Children's Ministry Coordinator in March 2019.

  • MeMe birchfield, bookkeeper

    Born in Taipei, Taiwan, MeMe moved to the United States at the age of two and grew up in Houston, TX. She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology. After a year in medical school in San Antonio, TX, MeMe moved back to the Bay Area, got married, and taught in a Christian elementary school for three years. She has homeschooled her seven children (four girls, three boys) and is currently teaching violin lessons and playing in her local symphony orchestra. She has been a Bookkeeper with Living Hope Bible Church since late August 2019.

  • Wendy Mar, Administrative Assistant

    Originally from San Francisco, CA, Wendy came up to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administrations and stayed in the Pacific Northwest. Wendy accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at age 7 at VBS and reaffirmed her faith in high school. She enjoys spending time with her husband and four kids. She was part of the core team that led to what is now Living Hope Bible Church and has been an Administrative Assistant since November 2017.

  • nita susanto, administrative assistant

    Upon graduating from high school in Indonesia, Nita came to the United States to pursue her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree  in Graphic Design from Iowa State University. She was involved in the Indonesian Christian Fellowship back in college and during one of the college retreats, was saved and accepted Jesus as her personal Savior.  In that fellowship, she met her husband, Andy, and have been blessed with two children. She takes delight in cooking and baking for her family, gardening, traveling, and interior design.  She has been an Administrative Assistant with Living Hope Bible Church since December 2018.
